Abstract:Objective：The study investigates and analyzes obesity rate in students aged 7-14 in Yizheng City by conducting a cluster sampling of 12，810 completed surveys to measure height and weight of students aged 7-14 in Yizheng City. Methods：China’s National Temporary Standard for Obesity and Overweight for Pre-school Children and Adolescents is used as a benchmark to measure the BMI value and determine whether the children and adolescents have weight-related problems. Results：Of the 12，810 students aged 7-14，6，699 are male（52%）with a mean BMI of 18.73 ± 3.84，and 6，111 are female（48%）with a mean BMI of 17.61±3.08. The difference between these two mean BMIs is significant（P < 0.01）；The obesity rate in Yizheng city for students aged 7-14 is 14.3%， with 19% of the males and 9.1% of the females are considered obese. The gender difference is significant（P < 0.001）among students aged 7-12 but insignificant（P > 0.05）among those aged 13-14. In urban areas，the obesity rates are 19.8% and 9.5% for males and femalesrespectively. Meanwhile in rural areas，male obesity rate is 14.6% and female obesity rate is 7.4%. For urban and rural areas，a significant gender difference（P < 0.001）is observed. Conclusion：According to the research， the obesity rate among students aged 7-14 in Yizheng City is high. The obesity distribution is higher in males than females and higher in urban areas than rural areas，and especially high in male children aged 7-12. To help improve the current situation of obesity，it is important to promote a healthy lifestyle，eating habits and advocate physical exercises in children’s education.
